Principles of Resistance Training Jay Dawes, MS, CSCS, NSCA-PT,*D

This presentation will discuss who is a Tactical Athlete and why these officers need to be treated as athletes.

Jay Dawes, MS, CSCS, NSCA-PT,*D, is the Director of Education for the NSCA. Previously, he was the Owner/director of the 180 Center for Health and Performance in Edmond, Oklahoma and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at Oklahoma State University in Health and Human Performance/Exercise Science. Dawes serves the National Strength and Conditioning Association in various capacities, assisting as the Oklahoma State Director, a Conference Committee member, the Personal Trainers conference sub-committee chair, an Executive Council member for the Personal Trainers Special Interest Group (PTSIG), and as an editor for the Strength and Conditioning Journal’s One-on-One Column.

Training for Selection/Testing Stew Smith, CSCS

This presentation will discuss various methods for training individuals who want to join the Military, Police, and/or Fire department. This presentation will also discuss training for elite units such as SOF, SWAT, and TEMS.

Stewart Smith, CSCS, is a Naval Academy graduate and a former Navy SEAL, and has worked professionally in the military fitness arena for over 15 years focusing on a specialty of helping people become Navy SEALs or any other member of a unit that requires a PFT. He has trained athletes in College, Olympians, and Professional Sports (Hockey and Baseball.) Currently, he trains young men and women for any profession that requires a physical fitness test, from law enforcement to military special-forces. Stew has been labeled the Personal Trainer to the Heroes of Tomorrow and recently launched www.heroesoftomorrow.org. This site is a tribute to fallen heroes and assists future heroes to train for any physical fitness test in the military and law enforcement agencies.

Program Design Mark Stephenson, CSCS,*D, ATC

This presentation will discuss the various ways to design strength and conditioning program.

Mark Stephenson, CSCS,*D, ATC, is the Director of the NSCA Human Performance Center. He has over 16 years of experience working with elite, professional, collegiate, and high school athletes. Coach Stephenson has worked in the private, professional, and Division I arenas. Prior to coming to the NSCA, he served as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Providence College where he worked primarily with Men's Basketball and Men's and Women's Ice Hockey. Coach Stephenson is a Certified Athletic Trainer, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, USA track and Field & Level I, and USA Weightlifting & Club Coach.

Periodization and Program Design Activity (Group Activity)

This activity will have attendees work together in groups designing programs for different scenarios.

Heart Rate Zone Training (Lecture/Hands-on) Matt Domyancic, MS

This session will discuss the use of Heart Rate Training Zones during training. Observing HR responses during task specific activities will take place

Matthew Domyancic, MS,is a police officer with the Fairfax County Police Department in Fairfax, VA. Matt is a member of the Law Enforcement Training Unit for the department and is responsible fro strength, conditioning, and officer survival training. He is also member of the Supplemental SWAT Team and Peer Support. Prior to becoming a police officer, Matt spent 4 years as a assistant strength and conditioning coach at Yale University and then 3 years as a part-time assistant strength and conditioning coach at Georgetown University. He began his academic career at the United States Air Force Academy where he was a member of the football team and completed his BS at Colgate University. He received his MS from the University of New Haven in New Have, CT.

Suspension Training (Hands-on) Joe Martin, DC

This session will discuss the various tests that can be utilized to assess anaerobic fitness.

Joe Martin, DC, started his commitment to fitness back in 1978 when he joined the US Navy and shortly after successfully completed the Navy's SEAL Team training. Joe got his Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, with a minor in Nutrition at Temple University, followed by a Doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine. Dr. Martin is international lecturer and a faculty member of Life Chiropractic College - West, where he has earned numerous awards for Faculty Doctor of the Year. As a Member of the Fitness Anywhere team, Dr. Martin works in a dual capacity. He is the Manager for Navy and Coast Guard Sales, with the TRX Force Training System, as well as a Certified Functional, Suspension Training Instructor (recognized by ACE, NSCM, and NASM). Armed with a quiver of clever one-liners, Joe can make your abs hurt more than the suspended crunch
