Meeting Minutes
Saturday, July 19th, 2003
The meeting was brought to order by Loren Chiu. He along with Eric Burkhardt and Brian Schilling are the founders of this, the Weightlifting Special Interest Group of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Loren stated the purpose of this group was to bring back NSCA members to their grass-roots, weightlifting. To much focus has been placed on other aspects of training, and this groups goal is to bring back members to the basics of the what this organization was founded upon.
Loren brought the first meeting to order and in an executive decision between the founders he was nominated as Chair and Brian the Vice-Chair of the executive council.,/p>
The first Item of business was the election of two additional at-large members to the Executive council. Nominations and ballots were taken. Then John Garhammer, PhD and Todd Baden, MS were elected to the council. By executive order Todd Baden was named Secretary and John Garhammer and Eric Burkhardt were at-large members.
The second item of business was to form sub-committees. Loren suggested we have a laison with USAW, John Carlock volunteered his services, and Andrew Fry volunteered to be laison with the NSCA's Board of Directors.
Andrew Fry then stated the national office is able to assist SIG groups in lining up potential speakers, submitting articles to the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, and finally nominate individuals for NSCA office.
Loren: We need a presence in the NSCA and there is a need for more weightlifting articles, and more presentations on weightlifting. Therefore, we need a symposia/presentation sub-committee.
Tony Moreno volunteered to Chair this sub-committee.
John Garhammer: We need to try and get something on the 2004 agenda. Teach people how to relate the movements.
Robert Townshend: suggested we develop a mission statement.
Loren: The purpose is to bring together people in weightlifting and create a membership base.
John G: Send the information to everyone on the mailing list and there needs to be a teaching commitment.
Robert T.: Do we need to intro this to sports?
Loren: The second sub-committee is for articles/research.
John G: Research effort to video the world championships is Vancouver, BC
Fry: What are the dates of the competition, but let's get back the article situation. The Performance journal on-line has a huge international presence, and the articles are practical. Mike Barnes as the contact for getting articles to the journal.
Grag Haff: Get a weightlifting theme for the performance article.
Helen Binkley: The articles are written at a 9th grade level for the lay person.
Michael Hartman: Go out and recruit members.
Fry: Wes Barnett is interested in the group.
Brian Schilling: How about Wes as a keynote speaker for the NSCA conference?
Fry: I will ask Wes at the Weightlifting Symposium in Colorado Springs. We need to contact Virginia Meier about getting speakers at the National Conference.
Loren: The meeting will come to close, and the information about the SIG group will be on the NSCA web-site SIG discussion. All members will receive a mailing list.
