NSCA Iowa State Newsletter                                                                        Winter 2013

Iowa Strength and Conditioning Professionals, Enthusiasts, and Coaches,

I am excited to be the new NSCA Director for Iowa. We have some unbelievable resources in the field of strength and conditioning here in the state of Iowa, and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet and learn from many of you. I am now honored to be given the chance to help grow the profession and assist as a means to disseminate world-class information to our state. We are privileged in Iowa to have nationally recognized collegiate sport programs at all levels, with top-notch strength and conditioning professionals associated with these programs. We have incredible high school strength programs with very strong coaching in which I personally have benefited. Every year, athletes out of these programs become part of UNI Athletics. These athletes have a distinct advantage because of their prior coaching, and it is appreciated. There are also phenomenal professionals in the private sector that are changing lives for the better. I have also greatly benefited from these individuals. Every year, we receive athletes that have had training in the private sector. These athletes prove to be enormous assets to our sports teams here at UNI year in and year out. This is why I am excited to work with all of you in the future.

I have put together an Advisory Board comprised of professionals in Iowa. We will work together to conduct future conferences, clinics, and symposia. The following list is the Iowa NSCA Advisory Board as well as a Liaison to our Board:

Armand McCormick: Owner of CrossFit Kilo and XL Sports Acceleration
Terry Noonan: Director of Athletic Training at the University of Iowa
Greg Kustra: President of the Iowa Weightlifting Federation (LWC)
Dr. Jeffrey Clark: Orthopedic Surgeon and President of Cedar Valley Medical Specialists (CVMS)
Dr. Robin Lund: Exercise Physiologist at University of Northern Iowa
Doug Gee: Athletic Director at ADEL High School
Courtney Novotny: Physical Therapy at CVMS and UNI Strength and Conditioning Coach
Jeff Conner: Owner of Power-Lift Equipment Company
Nick Davis: Liaison to Iowa NSCA Board and Conference Coordinator

I am excited to work with this great group of professionals, and I hope we can help to bring great educational experiences to all of you.

If you would like me to contact you in regards to future educational opportunities in the state of Iowa, please email me at jed.smith@uni.edu and I will add you to my contact list for future clinics.

I am looking forward to our future.

    Sincerely,

    Jed Smith

NSCA Vermont State Newsletter                                                                  Winter 2013

    Greetings!

My name is Justin Smith and I am the new NSCA State Director for Vermont. I have been a college strength coach for 10 years and a Member of the NSCA during my entire career. This past year I become a RSCC certified coach through the NSCA in addition to my CSCS®. I currently work at the University of Vermont (UVM) where I serve as the Associate Head Coach of Athletic Performance. At UVM, I work with men's hockey, skiing, field hockey, and men's and women's track and field. I am in charge of designing, implementing, and supervising year-round athletic performance programs for these teams. I have a tremendous passion for the field of strength and conditioning as well as athletics, and am looking forward to assisting all NSCA Members in the state of Vermont in any way possible.

Right now, I am in the beginning stages of putting together an Advisory Board to assist in the development of activities in the state, as well as planning for our state clinic, which will be hosted at UVM in June 2013.

The role of the Advisory Board will be to develop clinic topics, recommend and/or obtain presenters for clinics, and help with all clinic logistics. I am seeking a diverse group of individuals from across the state to serve on the board. Areas I would like to see represented on the board are listed but not limited to the following:

    • Strength and Conditioning Coach
    • Personal Training
    • Education - High School/Collegiate
    • Nutritional
    • Rehabilitation - ATC/PT
    • High School Sports
    • College Student
    • Member at Large
If you are interested in serving on the Advisory Board, please submit your resume and State/Provincial Volunteer Application to me at the email address below. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding the NSCA and the state of Vermont. I can be reached at (802) 656-0619, or at justin.smith@uvm.edu.
