Pre-Con SessionThis session will address proper technique for teaching linear and lateral movement including sequential body position for jumping and landing, acceleration and deceleration, and moving in multiple directions.
Pre-Con SessionThis session will examine the unique physical and mental demands that today’s combat athletes go through while getting ready for a fight. An overview of an 8-week training program will be presented and attendees will be taken through the process of developing a week-by-week plan to prepare an athlete for combat competition successfully. Various conditioning strategies will be presented along with hands-on demonstrations of some of the most effective methods, techniques, and exercises used to prepare today’s top fighters.
Pre-Con SessionMany sports are power oriented. Scientific research says that overhead lifts are one of the most effective methods for teaching power. The “Core of 4” is the foundation for teaching these lifts. This method is a very effective way of instructing large groups. If the lifts are performed correctly, everything else is a combination of bar and body movement. It provides a simple sequential method of instruction and learning for both the coach and the athlete. This session will cover these topics and the progressions associated with teaching the lifts.
Pre-Con Session |
The focus of this session will be to demonstrate why it is important for strength and conditioning professionals to have a baseline appraisal of fundamental movements. These fundamental movements are the foundation for strength, power, and endurance, and if they are not efficient, problems can arise. Identifying limitations in these movements will provide the strength and conditioning professional with a baseline movement appraisal, which is imperative when assuring durability. This session will discuss how to utilize a systematic approach to improve the ability to identify fundamental mobility and motor control weaknesses. The most current information available in utilizing this approach will be presented.
Pre-Con Session |
Pre-workout nutrition: The importance of energy-what it is and how much you need:
By: Jenna Bell - Energy is a term that is often used to describe a particular attribute about certain foods and other dietary products. However, this term is often misunderstood and misused. In this session we will define energy and take a look at that the types of foods that should be consumed to get the proper amount. More specifically, we’ll discuss the best time to consume energy and how different types of energy impact one’s ability to exercise.
Optimizing Resistance Training Practices for Acceleration and Speed
By: John Cronin and Bret Contreras - Acceleration and speed are perhaps the most coveted qualities in ground-based sports. However, many strength and conditioning coaches are unaware of the resistance training considerations for maximizing acceleration and speed. This session will review terminology and scientific formulae related to speed training; provide information on speed development for youths; investigate the changes in ground reaction forces (GRFs), joint torques, and muscle activation as speed increases; discuss the differences between acceleration and maximum speed sprinting; and review what is known about elite sprinters. Varying methods of developing acceleration and speed will be explored from a practical standpoint so attendees can “learn by doing.”
Optimal muscle recovery after exercise: The latest in nutrition and timing
By: John Ivy - This lecture will present a general overview of nutrition and evidence based research/information that will assist the trainer/coach in understanding the nutritional requirements of the fitness enthusiast or athlete. Nutrient timing (ie, when specific foods are consumed) is also a very important new dimension of helping individuals maximize their exercise potential and recover from strenuous exercise.
Pre-Con SessionThe high school athlete needs to develop a number of physical qualities in order to excel at sports. The Olympic lifts can provide improvement of these qualities as implemented by the procedures covered in this session. This approach is the result of over 40 years of coaching middle school and high school athletes in a variety of sports.
Pre-Con Session |
There are many different functional exercise options available for strength and conditioning professionals. The difficulty comes when attempting to choose which ones are more appropriate when training individuals. This session will discuss methods that can be utilized that will help determine how to prescribe functional exercises. There are a few functional exercises that can and should be a part of every strength coach’s library. These key functional exercises will be the focus of this session; specifically the rules, the exceptions, the explanations, and the perils.
Join us for complimentary food and drinks to kick off a great 36th Annual Conference inside the Exhibit Hall
Thursday, July 11, 2013
Attendees will be able to start their day off with an invigorating workout (come prepared to sweat). Attendees will experience the strengthening benefits of yoga through the eyes of a strength coach and realize how this modality has modern day applications for athletes of all ages and capabilities.
Lecture Through the use of case study approach, attendees will learn how to apply appropriate resources to facilitate the design and supervision of safe and effective exercise programs for clients with co-morbid medical conditions. Exercise professionals will learn how to work in conjunction with other healthcare providers to set appropriate health and fitness goals for their clients’ specific medical conditions while helping them adopt or continue to meet daily/weekly physical activity guidelines and goals.
LectureAs personal training continues to receive greater recognition, it also increases competition. Being competitive requires the need to not only polish skills as a practitioner, but to harness the qualities of great leaders, coaches, listeners, problem solvers, and right-brained thinkers as well. This session will be dedicated to integrating the innate characteristics of great trainers in order to complement your craft.
LectureThere are ever-expanding research capabilities and an increasing number of journals in the field of exercise and sport science, combined with misinterpretation by lay media. This means the strength and conditioning coach must be a “research consumer” that is able to discern what is quality research and how it can help their athletes achieve a competitive edge. This session will help coaches and trainers determine the value of published work and its applicability to their training practices. A step-by-step guide to breaking down a published research paper will be provided, along with real-world examples.
LectureThe purpose of this session is to examine current literature on off-season resistance training for endurance athletes. The current literature supports performance improvements following implementation of off-season resistance training. Even though marked improvements in endurance performance were noted, there were no significant improvements in aerobic capacity. Instead, it is theorized that endurance performance improved through neuromuscular adaptations leading to improved economy, increased power production, and improved stretch-shortening cycle. While performance improvements are supported, application of resistance training is currently under debate. Practical application of the scientific findings should be carefully considered.
Career TalkThis session will provide an overview of career opportunities in “Corporate Wellness.” Information will include a discussion on worksite health promotion including strategies companies are implementing for their employees to reduce healthcare costs, absenteeism, and workers’ compensation claims while improving health outcomes and morale, and the potential impacts on the health and fitness profession. In addition, details will be presented on the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this career track.
Career TalkThis session will talk about the importance of the high school strength and conditioning coach, and show research as to why teaching correct technique, proper program design, and athletic development are crucial in the beginning stages of development. This session will also review the many different parts that make up a high school strength coach, and present the rewards of being a high school strength coach.
ResearchDue to a lack of access, limited subjects, or other reasons, it is difficult to collect extensive cross-sectional or longitudinal data on elite athletes. Fortunately, we have been able to study United States Olympic male rowers since 1968 and U.S. Olympic female rowers since 1976. Furthermore, we have anthropometric and physiological data from the 1964 New Zealand National team. The data covers 13 Olympic Games. The purpose of this session will be to discuss the evolution of the elite rower in terms of anthropometrical changes and physiological responses to submaximal and maximal ergometer rowing testing (which was done to assist with Olympic team selection) over the last 48 years. In addition, the session will compare sport-specific training methods and also mention the development of a sport-specific, elite rower body composition calculation and changes to rowing ergometers used during the past 40 years. The session will also provide statistical analyses that identify trends and correlations to on-water performance.
Protein and Amino Acid Supplementation for Strength, Protein Synthesis and Hypertrophyby Terry Housh, PhD, FNSCA, Rachel Jones of GNC, Joel Cramer, PhD, CSCS,*D, NSCA-CPT, *D, FNSCA, Haley Bergstrom and Eric Ryan, PhD, CSCS,*D, NSCA-CPT,*D Lecture |
This session, sponsored by GNC, will cover protein and amino acid supplementation and its effects on strength, protein synthesis, and hypertrophy.
Career TalkMost Americans are not physically active at levels recommended to maintain proper health. With the increase in the aging population, the increase in non-communicable diseases, and the increase in healthcare costs, we are currently in a much needed healthcare revolution. Working with special populations presents opportunities that can secure advancement, longevity, and enjoyment as a personal trainer. Personal trainers with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Special Populations Specialist (CSPS) certification will position themselves to be seen as physician extenders, providing collaboration between healthcare providers and the needs of those with temporary and chronic disease or conditions.
Lecture |
This session will examine functional density and its application to individual exercises and training programs to help develop athletes and clients. Attendees will understand why certain exercises would be functionally dense for certain sports and activities. Attendees will also learn to develop the most functionally dense and intense workouts possible.
ResearchThis session will first discuss the contributions and historical significance of Dr. Gary Dudley. The remaining time will be devoted to discussing the importance of using logic, maintaining perspective, and avoiding absolutisms in the field of strength and conditioning. Essentially, the argument will be that strength and conditioning authorities (both coaches and researchers) should strongly consider applying the teachings of Aristotle to their own craft. Several real-life coaching and research examples will help highlight this idea. The emphasis of this session will not be the presentation of “new scientific data” or a “revolutionary training system,” but rather to understand the root of most debates/arguments revolving around strength and conditioning, and to stimulate inquisition of the most fundamental principles in our field.
LectureAs the personal training and strength and conditioning industry continues to grow and evolve with new marketing challenges and increased competition, it is important to understand the dynamics of how to sell and grow business. This session will deliver strategies and techniques focused on improving the skill sets necessary to effectively find, sell, and retain business. With a clear focus on the conditions facing today’s strength and fitness professionals, this interactive session will challenge attendees to examine their current sales and marketing approaches, and deliver takeaways that can be immediately implemented to increase sales. Whether you are a trainer that is trying to further develop your sales skills, or an owner that is trying to find new strategies to expand your business, this session will be focused on laying out a framework to help build a sales strategy that delivers results.
LectureThe ability to change direction (COD) can determine quality of performance and affect the outcome of competition. In this session, different types of COD performance are detailed and some anthropometrical, technical, speed and leg strength/power considerations for improved COD performance will be discussed. Some of the latest applied research from our labs will be highlighted and particular attention will be given to the connection between assessment and programming for improved COD performance.
ResearchSport and physical activity makes us more fully human, but not everyone has equitable access to play and compete. While increasing participation in sport and physical activity by women and racial/ethnic minorities has received deserved attention, people with disabilities are sometimes still left on the sideline. What can be done to increase opportunities to get people with disabilities more involved? The answer must be considered from social, legal, ethical, and economic perspectives. This session will discuss several approaches including looking at sports as a human right and also applying the concept of universal design in the sport setting.
LectureUp to 67% of individuals will experience shoulder pain in their lifetime with numerous professionals often involved in their care. Attendees will be able to start their day off with an invigorating workout (come prepared to sweat). Attendees will experience the strengthening benefits of yoga through the eyes of a strength coach and realize how this modality has modern day applications for athletes of all ages and capabilities.
LectureAlthough decreased pain is usually a common indicator for healing, it is, in fact, an incomplete outcome measure. Often, patients continue to exhibit movement dysfunction at the time of discharge. Therefore, there is a need to integrate movement indicators to establish a baseline and determine if patients are predisposed to further injury. Furthermore, a multidisciplinary team and a scientific and systematic approach encompassing appropriate corrective strategies and sound movement-based training will contribute to successful, pain-free, and functional outcomes. This session will provide a balanced, comprehensive, approach to ensure enhanced performance in life or sport, injury prevention, and longevity.

Career TalkThis session will discuss how a performance trainer (which is an evolution of certified National Strength and Conditioning Association professionals) can have a passion for training athletes while working in a business or organization not related to a collegiate or professional sports program. Although many performance trainers work with developing athletes and elite athletes for off-season training, it has also inspired them to design their business and programs around training general fitness clients with modified performance training philosophies. The goal with the fitness athlete is to provide methods to appropriately improve athleticism, overall wellness and target long-term fitness goals. The idea that “everyone is an athlete” brings the passion and goal-oriented mentality of training athletes to the fitness training experience whether your clients are truly targeting sports performance or striving for a higher level of fitness. This requires the performance trainer to be well versed in both strength and conditioning as well as personal training methodology and skills. By recognizing what the leaders in performance training do to develop their careers, this session will provide the steps needed to gain the knowledge, skills, and attributes of a successful performance trainer.
LectureOvertraining is characterized by physical, behavioral, and emotional changes in an athlete that occur when the volume and intensity of training exceeds the ability to recover. Nutritional intervention has the ability to enhance recovery and potentially reduce the impact of overtraining. This session will cover both dietary changes and sport supplements that may aid in recovery and improve performance.
This session will examine existing long-term athletic development literature, highlighting key issues to consider when planning for pediatric strength and conditioning programs. Core training is a very popular topic that is utilized in everyone’s strength training program. This type of training is often defined differently depending on the strength coach or individual performing the training. The purpose of this session is to attempt to create a more consistent definition of the core as well as core training. This session will discuss the importance of creating a foundation in how we look at this area of training. In doing this, the focus will be on the backside of the core, breaking down the deadlift and hip hinge exercise and movements. Specifically, this session will discuss how to introduce a fundamental progression from basic, assistive techniques to higher level strengthening.
LectureThis session will discuss exercise readiness, and resistance, aerobic, and flexibility training for the disabled athlete with an emphasis on limb amputations and spinal cord injuries.
ResearchIngesting high-quality protein stimulates protein synthesis in the hours following a bout of resistance exercise. In addition, when high-quality protein is ingested for several weeks or months in conjunction with a resistance training program, improvements in both strength and lean body mass are observed. Do carbohydrates have similar effects on net protein balance, strength, and lean muscle mass? If so, how much carbohydrates should be ingested? What are the ideal times for its ingestion? This session will focus on dietary carbohydrate intake in conjunction with a resistance training program for optimizing net protein balance, muscular strength, and lean body mass.

How views have changed, should have changed, or stayed consistent? What do we know more of now, and what are we still learning?
CoachingMore than 30 million children participate in sports in the Unites States, and over 3.5 million receive medical treatment for a variety of sports-related injuries every year. The lack of a solid foundation of strength, fundamental movement coordination and control, early specialization, mechanical flaws and an increased demand for peak performance at a time of major physiological change has contributed to increased injury rates. Proper functional movement assessments and the use of age-appropriate and evidence-based functional strength and movement progressions are vital for preventing overuse injuries, long-term disability, and chronic conditions. This session will allow attendees to gain a better understanding of injury patterns among young athletes as well as proper screening and evidence-based prevention strategies for both the upper and lower extremities as they relate to the long-term athletic development model in youth.
LectureOver the past 15 years, Pavel Kolar and the Prague School of Rehabilitation have made radical advancements to our understanding of “core function” and its role in musculoskeletal pathology. CoachingWhen training basketball players, from adolescent to professional rankings, it is important to add sport-specific exercises and movements to help increase specific strength, speed, and power. Not only does it keep the athletes more focused because they are able to see how it translates on the court, but it also adds variety to what can be a tiring and lengthy off-season. This session will go over progressions and variations of agility, plyometric, and conditioning drills while putting a basketball-specific spin on some of the already popular exercises, and discussing how they can be administered for different age groups and skill levels.
ResearchPerformance of repetitions in a continuous fashion results in a decrease in velocity, counterproductive to the concept of specificity if power development is the goal of training. A number of methods have been introduced to counteract the decline in velocity, including intra-set rest, inter-repetition rest, and cluster sets. This session will highlight research on these training methods as well as discuss the possible physiological adaptations that result from training.
LectureThis session will focus on both traditional periodization as well as autoregulatory progressive resistance training (APRT).
