| Training the Multi-Sport Young Athlete |
Avery Faigenbaum, EdD, CSCS,*D |
Young multi-sport athletes are training harder and longer than ever before. However, it seems that well-planned strategies are needed to maximize recovery and return to an optimal performance state. In this lecture we will discuss misconceptions associated with sports-specific training, concepts regarding periodized training for young athletes, and the practice of less intense training. In addition, training concepts that may optimize performance and reduce the likelihood of sport-related injuries in young multi-sport athletes will be described. |

| Integrated Frameworks for Soccer Conditioning |
Ian Jeffreys, MSc, CSCS*D, NSCA-CPT*D, NSCA Coach Practitioner |
Effective soccer performance requires the development of a great number of fitness parameters, yet strength and conditioning coaches often have little time in which to develop these. Factors such as extended playing seasons and congested fitness programs limiting the time they can spend in direct contact with the players provides unique challenges to the strength and conditioning coach. Optimising the development of soccer fitness often requires the development of non-traditional approaches. In these situations, coaches need to train smart and integrate frameworks, where conditioning is included within soccer specific sessions, allowing for effective employment of highly specific conditioning. A time efficient method of conditioning can be developed, which also facilitates control of the overall training load, optimising recovery. |

| Combine Training for the High School Athlete |
Leo Totten |
More and more high school football players are following in the footsteps of their collegiate counterparts and participating in combines to get noticed by coaches at the next level. Proper preparation is essential to produce optimal scores for athletes who participate in these high school combines. As they would study for any classroom test, they need to take these physical tests with as much preparation as possible. Preparation and training is two-fold, proper technique in each of the tests that are administered, and proper training to optimize the speed, agility, strength and power for each test that would include agility drills, plyometrics and specific weightlifting recommendations. The purpose of this talk is to address these two major components of proper preparation for the high school level combine. In addition, these training techniques would be a valuable resource for all football players whatever their aspirations. |
Leo Totten, received his degree in Health and Physical Education from West Chester University and his Master's in Physical Education and Certification in Administration from Western Maryland College. Leo has received the USA Weightlifting Coaching Excellence Award, 2005; MSADA District 5 Athletic Director of the Year, 2003; Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame, 2001; Five-time World Championships Coach or Team Leader; USAW Board of Directors, 2nd Vice President and is currently the President, WerkSan Sports USA. |
