The Science of Flexibility Jared Coburn, PhD, CSCS*D

This talk will discuss the benefits and possible drawbacks of stretching exercises and flexibility training. Topics will include the role of flexibility in preventing injury and enhancing performance, as well as the acute effects of static stretching on strength, speed, and power.

Jared Coburn, PhD, CSCS*D, is an Associate Professor of Kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). He has published numerous manuscripts in the areas of resistance training and muscle function, presented research at national and international conferences, and has written several textbook chapters. In addition to his academic work experience, Dr. Coburn has directed physical therapy clinics and fitness/wellness programs, and served as a strength and conditioning coach. He is active within the National Strength and Conditioning Association, where he has been a member since 1984.

Training for Speed, Agility, and Quickness Lee Brown, EdD, CSCS*D, FNSCA

This will discuss the physiology behind SAQ training and identify neuromuscular adaptations to these exercises. Proper mechanics, intensity and volume will be discussed relative to maximizing performance.

Lee Brown, EdD, CSCS*D, FNSCA,is a Professor of Kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton. He is currently the Director for Cal State Fullerton’s nationally accredited (CAATE) undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program. In addition, Dr. Kersey is a reviewer for the Journal of Athletic Training, the Book Review Editor for Athletic Therapy Today and is the chair for the Position Statement on Anabolic Steroids for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.

Strength and Hydration Daniel Judelson, PhD

This presentation will summarize the effects of hydration on strength, power, and resistance exercise performance. Attention will also be devoted to the effects of hydration on the anabolic and catabolic hormonal response to acute resistance exercise. The presentation will conclude with speculation regarding training adaptations in active athletes who experience regular hypohydration.

Daniel Judelson, PhD,received his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from the College of William and Mary, completed his Master’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and earned his PhD. in 2006 from the University of Connecticut. Prior to beginning his doctoral studies, Dr. Judelson worked for two years as a Sport Physiologist for the United States Olympic Committee, providing physiological and biomechanical support to several national teams up to and through the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games. After completing his doctoral work he subsequently joined the faculty at Cal State Fullerton where he is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science.

Biomechanics lab Guillermo Noffal, PhD, CSCS

Guillermo Noffal, PhD, CSCS, received his doctorate in Biomechanics from The University of Western Australia. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Physical Education with a minor in Computer Science from San Diego State University. Prior to joining the kinesiology faculty at CSUF in 1996, he served as a research assistant for the Department of Defense conducting various experiments investigating the effects of heat and dehydration on human performance for individuals wearing full chemical warfare gear. He designed and has directed the Movement Analysis and Biomechanics Laboratories at CSUF, which focus on identifying internal and external forces present during various sport, exercise and clinical applications. He has served as a reviewer for Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Strength and Conditioning, Journal of Strength and Conditioning and the International Journal of Sports Medicine. He served two terms on the Board of Directors of the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports. He belongs to the Advisory Board for the Center for the Advancement of Responsible Youth Sport, and he is a member of the Southern California Sports Science Committee. Dr. Noffal makes frequent presentations at local, state, district, national, and international conferences with recent presentations in Australia, England, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica.

Performance Flexibility Mark Stephenson, ATC, CSCS*D

This session will focus on the proper utilization of both static and dynamic flexibility, their benefits, and the appropriate times to use each of these methods.

Mark Stephenson, ATC, CSCS*D,is the Director of the NSCA Human Performance Center. He has over 16 years of experience working with elite, professional, collegiate, and high school athletes. Coach Stephenson has worked in the private, professional, and Division I arenas. Prior to coming to the NSCA, he served as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Providence College where he worked primarily with Men's Basketball and Men's and Women's Ice Hockey. Coach Stephenson is a Certified Athletic Trainer, Certified Strength and Conditoning Specialist, USA track and Field & Level I, and USA Weightlifting & Club Coach.

Speed, Agility & Quickness Hands-on Jay Dawes, MS, NSCA-CPT*D, CSCS

In this hands-on session attendees will perform and learn specific teaching techniques and cues to teach a variety of drills used for improving speed, agility and quickness.

Jay Dawes, MS, NSCA-CPT*D, CSCS, is the Director of Education for the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Dawes has served the NSCA in various capacities, assisting as the Oklahoma State Director, a Conference Committee member, the Personal Trainers conference sub-committee chair, an Executive Council member for the Personal Trainers Special Interest Group (PTSIG), and as an editor for the Strength and Conditioning Journal’s One-on-One Column.
